2’,3’-Dideoxycytidine (ddC) is a synthetic nucleoside analog of the naturally occurring nucleoside deoxycytidine, in which the 3’-OH is replaced by hydrogen. Intracellularly, ddC is phosphorylated to dideoxycytidine 5’-triphosphate, which inhibits the activity of HIV reverse transcriptase. Incorporation of dideoxycytidine 5’-triphosphate into viral DNA stops chain elongation by inhibiting the formation of 5’ to 3’ phosphodiester linkage.
